It’s graduation season again, which means companies are ramping up their recruitment of summer interns. Many students might think that companies only care about school rankings and GPAs when hiring interns, but that’s not entirely true. Today, let’s talk about what companies here in China value most when recruiting interns:
Social Experience
Aside from a few highly specialized roles, companies often value social experience more than GPAs and certifications. For students without prior internship experience, it’s helpful to highlight participation in extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, or volunteer work on your resume. Even if these experiences aren’t directly related to the position you’re applying for, they can serve as valuable talking points during the interview.
Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
In our previous video, we discussed the importance of EQ in landing high-level positions, and it’s equally critical at every stage of a career. For interns, there are many ways to demonstrate high emotional intelligence. Here are some representative examples:
1. Keep your phone on silent during interviews.
2. Use clear and professional email subject lines when sending your resume, even if you’re applying broadly.
3. Confidently and proactively communicate with company contacts or interviewers.
Clear Planning
This includes both a well-thought-out timeline for your internship and a clear vision for your future. One of the most common questions I ask as an interviewer is, “What do you hope to gain from this internship?” Transitioning from school to the workplace is a big shift, where everything is no longer prearranged for you. The ability to take charge of your own future is critical.
